Lighting Glossary

Term: Nominal Lifetime
Generally nominal lamp lifetime describes the average life of a lamp in burning hours. That is the time after which 50% of a sufficient number of lamps has failed. Such tests are carried out with lamps of the same type and power rating under controlled conditions. Lamp life is given based on certain switching cycles (3h for fluorescent & compact fluorescent lamps; 12 h for incandescent & tungsten halogen lamps). More frequent switching reduces lamp life. Rated lifetime is the lifetime a light source achieves under certain conditions.
